Electrodiagnostic Comparison of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome between Tennis Players & General Population

Abstract
[INTRODUCTION] Generally some injury is originated from continuous and repeated movement of the same body part. The purpose of this study was to investigate the injury segment of general tennis players (TN) who were diagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) by electrodiagnosis. CTS is a entrapment neuropathy of the median nerve at the wrist and especially derived from frequent using of the wrist.

[METHOD] TN group, wheelchair tennis players (WT) group, CTS patients group and normal control group were participated in this study. We set clinical symptoms, physical examination as a independent variable and electrodiagnostic examination as a dependent variable. In each group we measured the following values: distal motor latency, motor segment NCV, distal sensory latency and sensory segment NCV of the median and cubital nerves. And we searched a correlation of values of electrodiagnostic test in each groups using independent t-test.

[RESULT] Four out of fifteen tennis athletes who had electrodiagnostic test were diagnosed as CTS. Three of these athletes were diagnosed as bilateral CTS (one was TN and two were WT Player). Five of these athletes were found as suspective entrapment neuropathy.

,b>[CONCLUSION] We concluded that CTS with ulnar neuropathy can be induced by the repeated use of wrist. Especially, In the case of WT groups, possibility of getting median neuropathy at the carpal tunnel and progress
to CTS is more higher than the general TN group. Therefore WT have to consider various ways to prevent risk of CTS and median neuropathy.
